Happy New Year!
January 01, 2006

.

This is me outside after I heard we had to wait 30 minutes for a table.

Yesterday I spent time with one of Sunja's friends named Jin, her husband and son.  They are a very sweet and kind family.  It was the son's 14th birthday (13 if he was in USA - Koreans count the year in the womb as 1 year) and we went to see King Kong then had dinner at T.G.I. Fridays.  Afterwards we went to a cocktail bar where I was introduced to a super cute lady who runs the place.  We sat around a chatted for a while and before I left, the owner gave me a bottle of wine.  I hope I can enjoy it with her one day!

They invited me out the next day too.  We spent all day together visiting a traditional Korean city named Gyeongju.  It was absolutely amazing.  The place is rich with history and relics dating back centuries.  We visited the wonderful Gyeongju National Museum and the Bulguksa Temple which was built in the 15th century.  I took so many pictures that my battery ran out.  At the end of the night we ended up in downtown Daegu where they literally rang in the new year.  They rang a huge traditional Korean bell as the year turned into 2006.  It seemed like there were a million people crowding the streets.  It was a wonderful two day experience with a very nice family.

I took a ton of pictures.  Here's a montage of my day.

What I learned today about Korea:  1)  Family is super important here and it's common for a grandparent to live in their children's home.
