Gay Korean Cannibal
October 10,
2005
After work today the guy who works in the office next
to mine
offered me a ride home. I was glad to accept. I'm a big
fan of free. He's given me a ride before and was one of the
gentlemen who picked me up at the train station when I first
arrived. He's a very nice man but I always thought there was a
little something weird about him. One time when he gave me a
ride home, he came into my apartment, sat on the couch, grabbed the
remote and started to watch TV. I thought to myself "Is he
staying the night?" and "What will the neighbors think?"
He knows a little English so that helps. He,
via my interpreter, asked if I wanted to come over to his house for
dinner. I had just eaten so I said no thanks, but some other
time sure. He then said that he wanted to go by his house
first to change and then he'd take me home. My apartment is
about 20mins away from school and his apartment ended up being
20mins the other direction. Sound weird to you? Yah...me
too.
It's kinda odd when we are in the car together.
He points out all the signs he sees in English and reads them to me
and also points out places in Korean and expects me to understand
what he's saying. There are also long pauses of silence.
It's during that time that I get the feeling that he's going to take
me out to the Korean woods and deliver me to a band of Merry Gay
Cannibals as a grand prize. I'd be one helluva dinner! I
have no idea why I came up with that thought, that's just what it
feels like during the silence as he's driving me around. So
far, he hasn't taken me out to the woods or tried to eat me.
We arrived at his home and he invited me in. I
thought that maybe he didn't understand that I didn't want to have
dinner, but knew it was too late to try to communicate that now.
He had a nice wife who immediately sprung into action when he came
home. She made some tea, chopped up apples and other
fruits, and served them to us promptly. We sat on the floor and
took our shoes off at the front door of course. The place and
floor was immaculately clean. You could eat off the
floor...literally. After fruit and tea (was that dinner?) he
took me home in what I assume was his driving outfit. It was a
baseball cap, jeans, shirt, and a vest.
What I learned
today about Korea: 1)
There might be a band of Merry Gay
Cannibals in the woods here.
