Happy Birthday Eric!
December 31, 2006
Today was Eric's birthday. American style, he
turned 13 today. But Korean style, he's been 14 all year.
Koreans count the time in the womb as your first year. So that
means I'm a year older here than in America. Another
interesting thing here is you don't actually increase in age on your
birthday.
Every Korean will automatically be one year older
tomorrow because it's a new year. Even though Eric is
technically 13 and I'm 38, if we go by Korean style, tomorrow he'll
be 15 and I'll be freaking 40! Gah, I have to get back to LA
soon so I can be 38 again.
If this sounds confusing just take whatever age
you will turn to next year and add 1. So tomorrow, if your
birthday is later in the year (like mine), you automatically are
that age January 1st plus another year for the womb. So I'm 38
now, I'll be 39 in October of 2007, add a womb year and viola!
I'm freaking 40 tomorrow.
What I learned today about Korea: 1) I'm 40 here?
WTF?
