Pre-Wedding Party
October 24, 2006
The future bride and groom!
Tonight was a pre-wedding ceremony (Haum) at the Hwang
home. Jin's sister Yu Jin is getting married next Sunday.
It was a Korean traditional event. In the olden days, the
fiancé would come with his closest friends with tons of food on
their backs. They would yell into the home of the bride to be
and pretend to try to sell the food to them. The family would
invite them in and everyone would enjoy the food and fun.
These days, people don't do it quite like that.
A few of the groom's friends did come over with enough food to feed
13 small countries and we did have a little party though.
There was also a special table prepared with all the traditional
food. The bride & groom bowed ceremoniously as well.
Later that night, all the men went out drinking till the wee hours
of the morning. I couldn't go because of a stupid cold.
The weather is changing here and it's really kicking my butt.
The future bride and groom's posse!
What I learned today about Korea: 1) I look like a giant
abscessed boil in the middle of good looking Koreans.
