Jin's Father
October 1, 2006
This week is Chusok* in Korea. One of the
first things people do to prepare for this holiday is to visit the
grave of the father or grandfather of the family. Today I went
with Jin, her husband, and her mother to her father's grave.
An interested thing about the graves in Korea is that they believe
the person "is really there." Meaning, you wouldn't
necessarily say you are visiting your father's grave, you would say
you are "visiting your father." Very interesting huh?
* - Chusok, also known as the Korean
Thanksgiving, is held on the 15th day of the 8th lunar month.
Chusok means a great day in the middle of August. It occurs during
the harvest season. Thus, Korean families take this time to thank
their ancestors for providing them with rice and fruits.
What I learned
today about Korea: 1) The Korean graveyards are always
on mountains.
